Las Vegas Federal Courthouse shootings
~sigh~ A courthouse security officer (a retired LVMPD officer) died in surgery. It was quite a gunfight. (link to youtube) Hell of a morning for Jury Duty, indeed. ETA: The low white building in the foreground is the back of the 5th St. School (not in session) and behind that, across Las Vegas Blvd is the Federal Building, so there's no actual footage of bodies, etc. Just the audio of the battle -- but from 2 blocks away and it's still intense. |

Barefoot Pinot Grigio Champagne
We popped open a bottle of this last night on a whim to toast my friend Kim's b-day. I'm not a fan of champagne. With rare exception, dry white wines taste metallic to me, and most champagnes I've been served are very dry wines. Color: Very pale straw color. Sniff Test: Oh yeah, this is a Pinot Grigio. Citrus nose, but with a minerally note. Champagne flute: this is a very dry Pinot Grigio. Tart grapefruits and lime, a minerally aftertaste that (to me) verges on being metallic, but not enough to be yecchy. Nice crisp finish. White wine glass (day 2): I've got a stopper that's designed for Champagne bottles, so the wine was still quite fizzy. The lime, grapefruit, and mineral notes are still there, but the mineral taste was less pronounced and was now a pleasant counterpoint to the citrus. I'm not sure if this was a function of the glass or of "breathing." Oh, and for some reason, the sparking Pinot Grigio didn't give me heartburn the way still PG does. Verdict: If this wine were a skoosh sweeter, I'd be on it like white on rice. As it is, if you want to try something that's off the beaten path for Champagne, or you're having some sort of festive (but not super fancy) occasion that you want to serve a sparkling wine at, or if you like dry Pinot Grigio and want to see what it's like as a sparkler, then give this a try. It's a good value for an "everyday" Champagne. |

A man, a plan, a canal, Panama
I now have figured out that what I really want to do with my winter break is purge and completely reconfigure my home office. Of course, I go back to work Tomorrow. Of course, that's not going to stop me. ;) ETA: Furnishings are now in the final position. I feel like I've been hit with a stick, especially my back. But, I like how it's laid out. |

Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon
I generally speaking, don't like Cab Sauv. I call it "Mr. Grinch" because it's so tannic. (So far, I've only liked 337 and Five Rivers.) Color: Nice wine red. Sniff Test: Cherry, Black Currant, Blackberry, and a big ole streak of vinegar. Seriously, the nose on this causes a fresh spurt of saliva into my mouth. First Impression: Cherries and tannins to make me pucker, but no vinegar taste. Breathing Room: Cherries, Black Currant, Blackberry and the tannins no longer stab you in the toungue. I paired this with a cheeseburger (this is a "back yard grill" wine) and found that the cherry flavor became more pronounced and smoky. Mouthfeel is medium weight. The finish is medium length and eventually ends in a wierd yeasty note. Verdict: This isn't a very interesting wine layered with complex and subtle tastes. It does nothing wrong, but it doesn't do anything really right. If you're throwing a few burgers on the grill and want something with a little robustness to it, sure, this is fine. And if you can get it for $5-6, sure, drink it for that glass a day of red wine. However, if you're looking for value Cab Sauv, for $10-15, you can get something (like Five Rivers) off of Wine Witch's list. |

the 650 pound virgin
So, I'm watching this special on TLC about a guy who lost about 400 pounds and now he's trying to find the right girl, because he's never really been kissed, etc. And he's best friends with Chris, the local TV personality and personal trainer who befriended him and helped him take off all that weight. In fact, they are now housemates and have a little personal trainer business together. They are the world's cutest Heterosexual Life Partners. |

New Year's Eve in Wine
We started the night at Nora's Wine Bar to ring in the New Year and to celebrate my friend Drea's Birthday. Nora's has a system whereby you can self serve wine by the 1,3,or 6 oz portions, which will let you sample a small serving of wine before you get a full glass of it and discover you don't like it. ( 3 Reds, 2 Italian and 1 Californian )Barefoot Sparking Moscato. I normally don't care much for Champagne. I've had expensive stuff and I've had swill, and with the exception of whatever it was that Dail served for her retirement party and Barefoot's Chardonnay Champagne (aka "Brut Cuvee") it's always tasted like one of three things to me: sour fizzy water, carbonated industrial solvent, or carbonated sugar water with splash of Glade/Lysol and a skunky aftertaste. ( Sparkling Moscato was none of these ) |

Goodbye 2009
It was bumpy, and I'm glad to see 2010 come in. The "Naughts" were a pretty meh decade for me and they were downright bad several friends of mine. I'm glad to see them go. |

Signing today
So we had a signing with the Filbach Bros (artists of the Clone Wars comics) and ... 1) Dear God they both look like the belong on a horse out in the high country. Seriously. (I'll have photos in a few days.) 2) I've never seen two siblings more joined at the brain. 3) We discovered they live in our housing development. --- And yes, they are as nice and funny as they are talented and good-looking. |

Barefoot Merlot
I've been dying for a glass of red wine so ... I flipped a coin and chose Barefoot's Merlot. Color: Deepest ruby red. Sniff Test: A little flat on the nose, but a blackberry note. First Impression: I'm hoping this wine is a little closed at first. Blackberries up front, tannins on the mid palate, and an oddly pleasant dusty leather note on the end, aftertaste is blackberry tea. Mouthfeel is a little thin. But I'll say up front, at this point Corbett Canyon was already a better, more interesting wine. Breathing Room: The nose opens up and smells pleasantly of blackberries and black currants. The tannins are softer and the blackberry notes are more pronounced, the mouthfeel becomes a bit silky even. There's the leathery notes towards the end, and even a kiss of parsley. The finish has a skoosh of vanilla in it. Final Verdict: As an every day table wine, this tastes fine. It has no faults, and it's got the classic Merlot blackberries, but it's not a particularly rich or interesting wine. Corbett Canyon Merlot is a better wine at a cheaper price. |
